Mayoral News 2019

Homeless Christmas Shoebox Appeal Mayors of Ferndown and Wimborne.docxThere has been an extraordinary response to this year’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal in aid of local homeless people with nearly 300 boxes donated across Ferndown and Wimborne. The campaign was introduced by the late Cllr Steve Lugg 3 years ago and the appeal continues to be in his memory.

The appeal was launched in October with the Mayors of Wimborne Minster and Ferndown joining forces in the campaign to encourage residents across the two towns and surrounding parishes to donate shoeboxes to drop off points - and what a response there’s been! As Christmas has approached the boxes have come in in their droves – all beautifully wrapped and jam packed with necessary items such as toiletries, hats, gloves and sachets of drinks/soups as well as a few sweet treats thrown in to the mix. Many boxes included a Christmas card for the recipient to open on Christmas day. All boxes will be donated to Trova’s Help the Homeless Appeal and distributed locally.

The Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Julie Robinson, commented, “When Steve Lugg helped to introduce the campaign in 2016 his words were, “There is so much more good in the world than bad, and we need to celebrate it”. The response to this year’s appeal is testament to Steve’s words and he would be proud. Each box donated will go a long way in spreading a little joy to a homeless person’s Christmas. I’d like to thank every person and organisation who has donated to the appeal, all those local shops and organisation who have agreed to be drop-off points for boxes, and Meridian Air Conditioning for co-ordinating the drop-off points.”

Cllr Shane Bartlett, the Mayor of Wimborne Minster added “I supported the late Steve Lugg who initiated this project locally and he would have been overwhelmed with the support and generosity it has received from the public as am I. I would like to extend my thanks to the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Julie Robinson for extending the appeal to Wimborne Minster and surrounding areas therefore allowing myself to be a part of this worthwhile cause, bringing some benefit and festive cheer to those less fortunate.”
