Abbeyfield Wessex Society

Abbeyfield Wessex Society offers independent older people the opportunity to live in comfortable supported sheltered accommodation in one of our 10 houses across East Dorset and Hampshire. Located in Church Road, Ferndown the Society’s two houses Abbeyfield Widgery and Abbeyfield Moretons offer active and independent older people accommodation to rent in these attractive houses within their own landscaped gardens. Anyone over retirement age is eligible to be considered and there is no upper age limit.

Most houses have between 8 and 14 residents. Residents have their own one bedroom en-suite apartment or a self contained studio together with use of the communal areas. Although each house is different, they all offer the same high standards of safety, security and service, and all houses have a no smoking policy.

Every house offers a tranquil, positive communal environment with the freedom for residents to come and go as they please without restrictions or rules, except a few simple house courtesies to ensure all residents can live in a comfortable, peaceful environment. At each house there are on site staff and there is a 24 hour emergency call system. Moretons has a full lift to the upper floor. The houses also offer a residents lounge and dining room, and a fully equipped laundry room.

Our trained team of house staff provide two good quality home-cooked meals every day which are served in the dining room. Rental fees are inclusive of service, food and utility bills, so you do not have to worry about multiple monthly payments or hidden charges. All house maintenance is also covered. Residents bring their own furniture for their room, although we provide curtains, carpet and a fridge. We regret that due to the nature of the houses, we cannot accommodate pets.

Short Breaks and Holidays

Abbeyfield also provides facilities for short breaks and holidays at any of our houses. In addition, many of the houses have a guest room so that friends or relatives can come for a short stay.

Volunteering

As a not-for-profit charity, volunteers play a crucial role to ensure we maintain our high standards whilst keeping our charges so affordable. Volunteers run the society as trustees and members of the Executive Committee. All our volunteers are intrinsic to the wellbeing of residents, and we have volunteering opportunities with a more informal role such as befriending our residents or helping with outings and fundraising.

We provide training and support for all our volunteers to ensure that your skills and abilities are utilised effectively, and we help to reimburse volunteer expenses.

Volunteering is a fantastic way of enriching your own life and the lives of others whilst having the opportunity to form new friendships and develop your interests. As a Society we are always keen to welcome individuals interested in volunteering.

If you think you might be interested in volunteering with the Society, please see how to contact us on the right hand side of this page.
